Move over, therapy sessions and stress balls — your dog might be the most effective calming presence you have.
According to the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, dogs are better at helping us relax during stressful moments than our friends, family — even spouses!
Here’s the science:
In one study, participants were put into high-stress situations — like solving difficult math problems or plunging their hands into freezing water.
Some people had a friend or partner nearby. Others had their dog.The result? Those with their dog by their side had smaller spikes in blood pressure and heart rate than those with a human companion.
In another study on anxiety, people who interacted with their dog saw bigger mood boosts and reductions in anxiety than people who used other common stress-relief techniques — like meditation or deep breathing.
Why are dogs so powerful?
It comes down to unconditional love and zero judgment.
Your dog doesn’t care if you bombed that meeting, forgot a birthday, or wore pajamas all day.
They accept you completely.
And that kind of pure, consistent support is rare — and healing.
Try this the next time you feel overwhelmed:
- Take 5 minutes to sit or walk with your dog.
- Talk to them like they’re your best friend (because they are).
Focus on their breathing, tail wags, or just their presence.
It can reset your mood and your nervous system faster than you think.
