Have you ever been driving – and a friend in another car says, “I know where the restaurant is, follow me.” Well, when we follow another driver, we’re more likely to drive unsafely and get into an accident!
Listen to this: Researchers at Arizona State University recruited people for a driving simulation experiment. Some were told to drive without assistance – others followed GPS – and another group was told to drive while following a friend’s car.
And overall, following a friend led people to drive faster and more erratically, get closer to the car in front of them, and make quicker lane changes.
Drivers following a friend were also more likely to run red lights, and not slow down for pedestrians crossing the street. And in these experiments, the person leading didn’t break any laws or drive erratically.
So, the follower wasn’t copying the risky driving behavior from someone else. The researchers say the increase in risky behavior is a symptom of people fearing they’ll get lost.
So, you and I are better off putting the address where we’re going in our GPS and telling our friend you’ll meet them there.
